National Cancer Institute (NCI)

NCI coordinates the National Cancer Program which conducts and supports research training health information dissemination and other programs with respect to the cause diagnosis prevention and treatment of cancer rehabilitation from cancer and the continuing care of cancer patients and their families.

NCI accepts LRP applications from researchers with any biomedical doctoral degree who engage in qualifying cancer-focused clinical research, pediatric research, or health disparities research. NCI does not give preference to applicants with one type of biomedical doctoral degree over another.

National Eye Institute (NEI)

NEI conducts and supports research that helps prevent and treat eye diseases and other disorders of vision. This research leads to sight-saving treatments, reduces visual impairment and blindness, and improves the quality of life for people of all ages. NEI-supported research has advanced our knowledge of how the eye functions in health and disease.

NEI will give higher priority to applicants whose research and clinical degree are in a health-related field with special emphasis on vision. NEI will support LRP applications pertaining to clinical, pediatric, and health disparities research from health professionals with doctoral degrees. This includes individuals with an M.D., O.D., D.V.M., D.O., Ph.D., or an equivalent health professional dual degree.

National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI)

NHLBI provides global leadership for research, training, and education programs on heart, lung, blood, and sleep (HLBS) diseases and disorders. The Institute creates and supports a robust, collaborative research infrastructure in partnership with private and public organizations, including academic institutions, industry, and other government agencies. NHLBI plans, directs, and supports basic, clinical, population, and health services research on the causes, prevention, and treatment of HLBS diseases and disorders.

NHLBI will support clinical, pediatric, and health disparities applications from health professionals with doctoral degrees.

National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI)

Completion of the Human Genome Project has opened up the "Genomic Era" in biomedical research. NHGRI supports research in several areas: elucidating the structure and biology of genomes understanding the biology of disease and advancing the science of medicine.

NHGRI will support the development of resources, approaches, and technologies that will accelerate genomic research on the structure of genomes, the biology of genomes, and the biology of disease; that will use genomics to advance the science of medicine; and that will incorporate genomics to improve the effectiveness of healthcare. NHGRI will also support genomic research in several cross-cutting areas, including the ethical, legal and societal implications of genomics and genetics research, bioinformatics, technology development, and research training and career development. NHGRI is also committed to supporting genomics research that addresses health disparities.

In general, NHGRI supports studies that provide generalizable methods and knowledge. Applications for studies relevant only to a particular disease or organ system should be directed to the appropriate Institute or Center. NHGRI strongly encourages potential applicants to contact program staff in the early stages of developing your application.

National Institute on Aging (NIA)

NIA leads a national program of research on the biomedical social and behavioral aspects of the aging process; the prevention of age-related diseases and disabilities; and the promotion of a better quality of life for all older Americans. NIA has a particular priority on the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and its related dementias.

NIA encourages all eligible applicants who have qualifying research (i.e., a commitment to engage in patient-oriented research with at least 50% effort for two years), including but not limited to clinical, genetic, biological, behavioral, social, economic and health disparities research related to aging, to apply for the most appropriate LRP program.

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)

NIAAA generates and disseminates fundamental knowledge about the effects of alcohol on health and well-being, and applies that knowledge to improve diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of alcohol-related problems, including alcohol use disorder, across the lifespan.

NIAAA encourages applicants whose qualifying research is consistent with the mission of the Institute. NIAAA accepts application in the Clinical (L30), Pediatric (L40) and the Health Disparities (L60) programs. Applicants are encouraged to review the NIAAA Strategic Plan for more information on our Mission Priorities. Applications from early career investigators with meritorious scores will be prioritized for funding. NIAAA will support new and renewal applications for up to two years, for a total of no more than four years.

Certain ethnic and racial minorities, as well as other underserved populations, experience more negative consequences of illness and premature death than other groups from alcohol use disorders. NIAAA is committed to the study of alcohol use in these groups and encourages researchers in this area to apply to the Health Disparities Program. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)

NIAID research strives to understand treat and ultimately prevent the myriad infectious immunologic and allergic diseases that threaten millions of human lives.

NIAID supports clinical, pediatric, and health disparities research LRP applications in NIAID-mission areas. For clinical and pediatric research, priority is given to M.D.s or other health professionals.

National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS)

NIAMS supports research into the causes treatment and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases the training of basic and clinical scientists to carry out this research and the dissemination of information on research progress in these diseases.

NIAMS encourages health professionals with doctoral degrees who are pursuing clinical, pediatric, or health disparity research within the mission of NIAMS to apply.

National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB)

NIBIB interests include the development and integration of advanced bioengineering, sensing, imaging, and computational technologies for the improvement of human health and medical care. An application is not within the NIBIB mission if its principal focus is the development of a technology with the goal of understanding basic biological function or pathological mechanisms. Additionally, NIBIB only supports projects developing platform technologies that are applicable to a broad spectrum of disorders and diseases. However, applicants may propose research that utilizes only a single tissue, organ, or physiological condition as a model system to facilitate the development of what is expected to be a more broadly applicable enabling technology. https://www.nibib.nih.gov/research-funding.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)

Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the NICHD LRP by email before submission if they have any questions about preparing their application, about whether their application falls under NICHD's mission, and any other NICHD-specific questions.

NICHD will support LRP applications that are based on research that promotes NICHD's mission. NICHD may give higher priority to applicants with doctoral-level clinical degrees, but this is not done routinely.

National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD)

NIDCD conducts and supports biomedical research and research training on normal mechanisms as well as diseases and disorders of hearing balance smell taste voice speech and language that affect 46 million Americans.

NIDCD will give higher priority to clinically trained applicants with doctoral degrees who engage in LRP-qualifying clinical research or pediatric research on hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech, or language.

National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR)

The NIDCR mission is to improve dental, oral, and craniofacial health through research, research training, and the dissemination of health information.

NIDCR will support Clinical Research (L30), Pediatric Research (L40), and Health Disparities Research (L60) applications from individuals addressing dental, oral, and craniofacial research in areas relevant to the NIDCR mission and align with NIDCR Research Priorities. These areas include behavioral and social sciences, clinical research, data science, computational biology and bioinformatics, dental materials and biomaterials, developmental biology and genetics, health disparities, HIV/AIDS and oral health, oral microbiology, mineralized tissue physiology, neuroscience of orofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders, oral and salivary biology, salivary biology and immunology, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and translational genetics and genomics.

National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)

NIDDK conducts and supports basic and applied research and provides leadership for a national program in diabetes endocrinology and metabolic diseases; digestive diseases and nutrition; and kidney urologic and hematologic diseases. Several of these diseases are among the leading causes of disability and death; all seriously affect the quality of life of those who have them.

NIDDK will support clinical, pediatric, and health disparities research LRP applications from applicants whose research is consistent with the missions of the Institute: NIDDK conducts and supports medical research in diabetes and other endocrine and metabolic diseases; digestive diseases, liver diseases, nutrition, and obesity; and in kidney, urologic, and hematologic diseases. National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)

NIDA's mission is to advance science on the causes and consequences of drug use and addiction and to apply that knowledge to improve individual and public health through effective dissemination and implementation of basic and clinical research findings.

NIDA accepts applications in the Clinical (L30), Pediatric (L40), and Health Disparities (L60) programs from qualifying applicants holding any biomedical or behavioral doctoral degree who engage in research relevant to NIDA's mission. Applicants are encouraged to consult the NIDA Strategic Plan to determine if their proposed research addresses the institute’s research priorities. Applicants who are earlier or more junior in their careers are given priority over mid-career or senior investigators.

NIDA is committed to addressing health disparities and supporting health equality research across the life span that considers the impact of age, sex, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, and socioeconomic status on substance use and addiction, and their health consequences. Scientists conducting basic, clinical, social, or behavioral research on health disparity populations (including individual members and communities of such populations) that aim to elucidate the causes of such disparities and methods to prevent, diagnose, and treat such disparities in substance using or substance-impacted populations are encouraged to apply. In addition, American Indians and Alaska Natives experience the highest rates of substance use, addiction, and related health consequences compared to other racial/ethnic groups. Research addressing these disparities is particularly encouraged.

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)

The mission of NIEHS is to discover how the environment affects people in order to promote healthier lives. Its vision is to provide global leadership for innovative research that improves public health by preventing disease and disability from our environment.

NIEHS will accept applications describing research projects that will have a defined impact on the environmental health sciences and be responsive to both the mission of the NIH and, specifically, to the mission of the NIEHS and the NIEHS 2018-2023 Strategic Plan. This plan outlines themes and goals that reflect both the mission of the NIEHS, which is to promote healthier lives by discovering how the environment affects people, and the vision of NIEHS to provide global leadership for innovative research that improves public health by preventing disease and disability.

A variety of scientific disciplines, including basic, mechanistic, clinical, epidemiological, computational, engineering, and/or health risk communication approaches, can be used to advance the NIEHS Strategic Plan. Applicants should consult the strategic plan to ensure the research proposed addresses the goals and priority areas of the NIEHS. Applications submitted to this FOA must have a research focus on exposure-health related responses from environmental agents within the mission interest of the NIEHS (e.g., industrial chemicals or manufacturing byproducts, metals, pesticides, herbicides, air pollutants and other inhaled toxicants, particulates or fibers, fungal, and bacterial or biologically derived toxins). Agents that are considered within the primary mission responsibility of other NIH Institutes and Centers include, but are not limited to: alcohol; chemotherapeutic agents; radiation that is not a result of an ambient environmental exposure; smoking, except when considered as a secondary smoke exposure that is a component in the indoor environment (particularly in children); drugs of abuse; pharmaceuticals; dietary nutrients; and infectious or parasitic agents. Applications that focus entirely, or primarily, on these exposure factors will be not be considered for support by NIEHS. NIEHS makes its funding decisions based on scientific merit responsiveness to the Institute's priorities and availability of funds.

National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS)

NIGMS supports basic biomedical research that is not targeted to specific diseases. NIGMS funds studies on genes proteins and cells as well as fundamental processes like communication within and between cells how our bodies use energy and how we respond to medicines. NIGMS supports research in the clinical fields of trauma, burn and peri-operative injury, sepsis, wound healing, pharmacogenomics, and anesthesiology and peri-operative pain.

NIGMS will give the highest priority to applicants with a clinical doctoral degree (e.g., M.D., Pharm.D., D.V.M.).

National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)

To transform the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses through basic and clinical research, paving the way for prevention, recovery, and cure.

National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD)

The mission of NIMHD is to promote minority health and to lead, coordinate, support, and assess the NIH effort to reduce and ultimately eliminate health disparities. In this effort NIMHD will conduct and support basic clinical social and behavioral research; promote research infrastructure and training; foster emerging programs; disseminate information; and reach out to minority and other health disparity communities.

NIMHD is looking for applicants whose research is consistent with the mission of the Institute.

National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)

The mission of NINDS is to reduce the burden of neurological diseases - a burden borne by every age group every segment of society and people all over the world. To accomplish this goal NINDS supports and conducts research both basic and clinical on the normal and diseased nervous system; fosters the training of investigators in the basic and clinical neurosciences; and seeks better understanding diagnosis treatment and prevention of neurological disorders.

NINDS will give highest priority to applications from individuals with clinically-oriented degrees (e.g. M.D. D.O.) who are licensed to treat patients in a health-related field. Applications from individuals with a Ph.D. or other research-intensive degree who are not licensed to treat patients will have a low probability of being selected for funding.

National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR)

The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) supports research that advances the prevention, detection, and management of disease and disability for individuals and populations, and informs practice and policy across clinical and community settings. Drawing on nursing’s holistic, contextualized perspective, NINR funds observational, intervention, and implementation research that integrates factors at multiple levels, including social determinants of health, to identify their role in health, health improvement, and health inequities across many settings, including homes, schools, workplaces, clinics, criminal justice facilities, and the community. Advancing health equity is an area of high priority.

NINR supports clinical, pediatric, and health disparities LRP applications from health professionals with doctoral degrees. NINR will give highest priority to applications from nurse scientists.

National Library of Medicine (NLM)

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is the world’s largest biomedical library, and it supports and conducts research and research training relevant to information science, informatics, data analytics, and data science to advance computational biology and computational health science.

NLM will support LRP applications for the Clinical Research, Pediatric Research, and Health Disparities Research programs from applicants addressing innovative research and development in biomedical informatics and data science. The scope of NLM's interest in these research domains is broad, with emphasis on new methods and approaches to foster data driven discovery in the biomedical and clinical health sciences as well as domain-independent, reusable approaches to discovery, curation, analysis, organization and management of health-related digital objects. Application topics may include but are not limited to health care delivery, basic biomedical research, clinical and translational research, precision medicine, public health, biosurveillance, health information management in disasters, and similar areas.

John E. Fogarty International Center (FIC)

FIC promotes and supports scientific research and training internationally to reduce disparities in global health.

National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS)

The mission of NCATS is to catalyze the generation of innovative methods and technologies that will enhance the development testing and implementation of diagnostics and therapeutics across a wide range of human diseases and conditions.

National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH)

NCCIH is charged with the mission of defining through rigorous scientific investigation the usefulness and safety of complementary and alternative medicine interventions and their roles in improving health and health care.

• Advance the science and practice of symptom management
• Develop effective practical personalized strategies for promoting health and well-being; and
• Enable better evidence-based decision-making regarding the use of complementary health approaches and their integration into health care and health promotion.

In pursuit of these goals NCCIH supports research on mind and body interventions practices and disciplines; research on natural products; and studies of "real world" patterns and outcomes in the use of complementary therapies.

NCCIH encourages all eligible applicants with biomedical doctoral degrees to apply to the LRP including those with clinical doctoral degrees (i.e., Ph.D. and M.D.), individuals with doctoral degrees in complementary health practice (i.e., Ph.D., N.D., D.A.O.M., D.C., D.O., D.N.P., etc.) or both. Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (ORIP)

ORIP provides infrastructure and research resources for innovation. The NIH-wide nature of ORIP includes coordination of research and other activities to advance medical research in all disease areas and across the basic translational and clinical research continuum including the development and access to critical animal models to study human health and diseases.

Apply to the NIH institute or center that most closely aligns with your area of research. ORIP cannot be listed as the primary institution but can be listed as a secondary institution on new applications.

The research must be directly related to the ORIP mission. Specifically, proposed research investigations must be applicable to the interests of two or more of the categorical NIH Institutes and Centers. In addition, projects that predominantly address the research interests of one NIH Institute or Center, but that are peripherally related to the research interests of other Institutes and Centers, will not be considered appropriate. An example of an inappropriate request is one exclusively involving an animal model of cancer or some other specific disease. ORIP will give higher priority to applicants with the D.V.M./V.M.D. or equivalent degree.

Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH)

ORWH advises the NIH Director and staff on matters relating to research on women's health; strengthens and enhance research related to diseases, disorders, and conditions that affect women; ensure that research conducted and supported by NIH adequately addresses issues regarding women's health; ensures that women are appropriately represented in biomedical and bio-behavioral research studies supported by the NIH; develops opportunities and support for recruitment, retention, reentry, and advancement of women in biomedical careers; and supports research on women's health issues.

Apply to the NIH institute or center that most closely aligns with your area of research. ORWH cannot be listed as the primary institution on applications but can be listed as a secondary institution. ORWH gives consideration to individuals supported from a research activity consistent with the goals, objectives, and guiding principles of the trans-NIH Strategic Plan for Women’s Health Research. ORWH will support applications from all five Extramural Loan Repayment Programs.
