Current and former LRP awardees may apply for a competitive renewal award as long as they continue to meet eligibility requirements, with the exception of the debt-to-income ratio. Renewal applicants must apply to the same LRP (e.g., Extramural or Intramural) from which they received their most recent LRP award. For example, if a former Intramural LRP awardee wishes to apply for an Extramural LRP, they must apply for a new award.
LRP policy allows a thirty-seven month period (starting the day after the last day of the most recent LRP award) for submitting a renewal application. After this period, any application submitted is considered an application for a new award, regardless of any prior unsuccessful attempts within the thirty-seven month period.
LRP renewals are competitive, stand-alone applications for one- or two-year awards, and there is no limit to the number of times an LRP can be renewed. Renewal applications may include new research proposals, colleagues, and institutions. Renewal applications require the same documents seen in a new award with an additional two-page Research Accomplishments document that details an applicant's research progress since the applicant's most recent LRP award.
LRP awardees can apply for, and potentially receive, as many renewal awards as long as they continue to meet the eligibility criteria and have eligible educational debt. Anyone unsure about their renewal eligibility should contact the LRP Information Center.
